Muller's Famous Fried Cheese Cafe

Am I holding a plate of fried cheddar cheese stuffed with ham, potato salad, and a small regular salad? Yes, yes I am. But wait! That's a fried thing! Don't you have Celiac? Yes, yes I do.

A common misconception amongst the gluten free community is that eating out is impossible. I'll admit that it can be quite challenging, but I can assure you that it's totally possible and you, too, can enjoy such a wonderful dish!

Though, perhaps, I shouldn't eat this every day. Ahem.

First, I need to give credit to my best friend forever, Nikki. Not only did she take the photograph of me leading this review, but she put in so much research and found this particular location as a recommended, Celiac Friendly establishment. She even went so far as to make phone calls! (This is a fantastic idea, and greatly encouraged)

When we arrived, I informed who I thought was our server of my Celiac Disease. As it turns out, she was the owner! To my further surprise, she knew precisely what Celiac was. You know that vacant look in people's eyes when you bring it up? Nada. She was on this!

Immediately, the owner went out of her way to make me feel safe about ordering off the menu. I had originally picked an item that would be simpler to create gluten free, however, she informed me that they would be changing out the oil completely when preparing my dish and, as a result, I could order the fried cheeses.

Look at these:

I could have ordered any of those items! Overjoyed, I chose the Fried Cheddar Cheese Stuffed with Ham. I think I'll be going back relatively soon just to order the Fried Cheese Steak.

The owner was kind enough to let me know that the roasted potatoes could not be guaranteed gluten free, but immediately offered the potato salad as a substitute.

To reassure me further, she even brought out the breading the Chef planned on using to fry the cheese and to let me confirm that the breading was gluten free. I didn't ask for this. She simply did it. I know this is mind blowing customer service, here! This is why I completely disregarded my previous plans for a restaurant review and wrote this one, instead!

During the meal, the Chef even checked in on us! I'm certainly impressed!

Did it Taste Like Cardboard?!

I am proud to say that I died and am currently writing this review from Heaven.

The breading had a light texture that reminded me very much of my earlier memories of breading. It was sweet, as can be noted about most gluten free food. Yes, it was a corn based breading. As for the ham and cheese itself? Spot on! The cheese was perfectly melted!

I considered taking another picture for the melted cheese perfection, but was too hungry and ate it. Sorry, y'all.

The salad was light and hit me in the homesick heart by having salt and pepper on the tomatoes. The sauce was some kind of radish goodness which I wildly ignored for the pure taste of fried cheese. I seem to remember I liked it. But, I liked the fried cheese dish as-is more.

The potato salad was quite different than standard American potato salad. I liked it! It was warmer, with hints of spice that filled the soul quickly.

Service: 10/10

Food: 10/10

Knowledge: 10/10

Did I react? Nope! I am perfectly clear of a gluten hit!

Remember, as with all restaurants, it's best to visit during off-peak hours. Even the safest of kitchens can easily make mistakes when slammed!
